TV ads go for the creepy

Toaster Strudel Boy has a strange, “You WILL eat that strudel,” look in his eyes.

Creepy sells. At least that seems to be one of the main trends in TV ad campaigns. Purveyors of everything from breakfast pastries to deodorant are doing the creepy dance in an effort to get consumers to part with their money.

Every now and then a comedian bursts on the scene who’s so funny he can make the audience laugh just by reading the phone book. Johnny Carson, Paul Lynde, George Carlin, Bill Cosby, George Burns, all had that special ability. Robin Williams had it too.

America’s Test Kitchen gets failing grade

While Cook’s Illustrated Magazine touts itself as not having advertisements, its TV show America’s Test Kitchen has serious commercial underwriters.

What’s cooking with America’s Test Kitchen? A lot of home cooks really like this PBS cooking show as well as its offspring Cook’s Country and Cook’s Illustrated Magazine, the publication that spawned them.

But many of these same fans believe they’ve been burned by the company’s overly aggressive marketing campaign which they claim floods them with spam and solicitations and dupes them into spending money on products they don’t want.
