I got meningitis by following doctor’s orders

Meningitis-2-Chart

Chart by Nucleus Medical Media, Inc.

How I got Drug-Induced Aseptic Meningitis by following doctor’s orders, a cautionary tale.

The last thing I expected when I went into the emergency room at Danbury Hospital for a viral infection was to end up getting meningitis in the process and getting even sicker. The sad thing is, it was avoidable.

How this all began. Shortly after a family gathering this past Easter I came down with what I called a bad case of the “flu.” You know the drill — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc…  I thought I could ride it out a few days. My husband got it too, so did my in-laws. They were sick a few days and then gradually got better. But I wasn’t riding it out well. Sorry for the graphic description, but I was coughing up “mud” on a continuous basis, and was getting severely weakened and dehydrated.

Steve and I cook The Weston Grilled Cheese for hungry cyclists. (Tom Steinert-Threlkeld far right)

While writing a story about Tom Steinert-Threlkeld (following his tragic death where he was the victim of a hit and run car accident), I took a look at his Facebook page.

We weren’t FB friends, but the page is open to the public. He was an avid photographer, and the page is full of photos of things he encountered on family trips and his many cycling journeys.

A tale of two Dollys

LeavelBlackhurst

Beth Leavel, left, and Klea Blackhurst portray America’s favorite matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi in two very different productions of Hello, Dolly!

What kind of fool goes to two different productions of the same show in two weeks? A musical theater fool.

I recently saw two productions of Hello, Dolly! The first was at the Cape Cod Playhouse in Dennis, Massachusetts, starring Tony-award winning actress Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone). The second was in East Haddam, Connecticut at the Goodspeed Opera House, featuring Klea Blackhurst in the title role. Two very different productions, but great fun for this Dolly fan.
