Christopher Walken as Captain Hook
Ingenious! NBC has announced that in its next musical, Peter Pan Live! which will be telecast on Dec. 4, they’ve cast Christopher Walken as Captain Hook.
Outstanding choice. Walken has the bravado, swagger, and audience appeal that makes him the perfect choice for the part.
As an homage to Walken, maybe instead of the sound of a ticking alarm clock inside Hook’s nemesis, the crocodile, it could be a cowbell. As we hear the croc slithering about, Hook could say, “Mooooore cowbell?”
Maybe not, but the point is, I’m marking my calendar for Dec. 4. This is definitely must-see TV.
Cyril Ritchard played an absolutely delicious Captain Hook in the 1954 production of Peter Pan, starring Mary Martin. Oh what will Christopher Walken do with songs like this:
It will be interesting to see who is cast as Peter Pan. There was early speculation it would be Kristen Bell, but alas, she is pregnant, so that didn’t uhh… pan out. There’s been talk about Miley Cyrus. Not that Miley couldn’t do it, but personally, I don’t want to see her do it. I would prefer a more qualified, theatrical actress. Some other possibilities? Perhaps Kristin Chenoweth, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Mandy Moore or Laura Bell Bundy? Interestingly, those actresses would also make great Tinkerbells too.
My number one choice though would be Carey Mulligan. She looks the part, can act like an imp, and has serious vocal chops, as exhibited in her heart-breaking performance of New York, New York in Shame:
