My crocuses have croaked
Welcome to New England. Where it’s spring one minute and winter the next.
Forget that the first day of spring, the vernal equinox, was March 20.
Forget that the Peepers were out singing and robins were huddling and gossiping about their winter vacays around the birdfeeder.
Forget that beautiful blue and purple crocuses had popped up, the first flowers of spring.
Forget that sunny yellow daffodils were following suit, with their shiny green stalks pushing upwards towards the sky, ready to bloom within the week.
Forget that on Saturday I took a long walk outside without a coat on.
Forget that I turned the heat in the house off. Not down. Off.
Forget that I put the shovels by the front door into the garage, tucked safe away for next winter, because the front steps won’t need any more clearing.
Yes, forget all that.
Because on Wednesday, April 16, it snowed. It’s 25 degrees in Connecticut this morning.
And winter, is back.
