Is it déjà vu all over again? Or perhaps a battle of the angelic divas? Whatever it is, Jackie Evancho and Amira Willighagen are making beautiful music.
Jackie Evancho wowed the judges and the American public in 2009, when at age nine she sang Puccini’s aria “O Mio Babbino Caro” for an audition on America’s Got Talent. Since then, Jackie’s star has risen to fame. She has recorded five albums (two gold, one platinum) and has filmed two solo concerts for the PBS series Great Performances.
A few weeks ago, Amira Willighagen, also nine, sang the same Puccini aria on the Dutch counterpart, Holland’s Got Talent. Like Jackie, Amira’s vocal prowess wowed the judges and audience. Amira has said she has no formal vocal training and taught herself opera by watching YouTube videos.
These are two very talented girls who bring immense joy to people through their musical abilities. That they are focusing on classical music and musical standards rather than “Oops I Did It Again” is a credit to them. It would be great to see other budding young performers take the high road like these girls and challenge themselves. So beautiful and so worth it.
