RuPaul’s Drag Race: Condragulations to Jinkx Monsoon
Who says nice guys (or girls) finish last? It’s monsoon season! Jinkx Monsoon season that is.
Jerick Hoffer aka Jinkx Monsoon won season five of RuPaul’s Drag Race, thus garnering the title “America’s Next Drag Superstar.”
Yes, yes, yes, and yes! As RuPaul would say, “Can I get an amen!”
Jinkx was the underdog. Full of vivacious, bubbling talent, but her fashion sense was a bit odd and she was less put together on the runway than her Beauty Queen competitors. But she’s young and still learning, and nice, and viewers like me fell in love with her.
Jinkx brought refreshing creativity to challenges in competitions that were otherwise, for the most part, snoozefests.
In one challenge, the girls had to dragify a military man. Unlike the beefy buff guys the other girls worked with, Jinkx’s man was older and not in good physical shape. So she crafted a routine where she was Gypsy Rose Lee and he was Mama Rose! Brilliantly funny.
In another great moment, for The “Snatch” Game — a Match Game parody, Jinkx decided to impersonate Little Edie Bouvier Beale, cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who was immortalized in the documentary Grey Gardens. This was not by any means a seemingly comical part as required for the challenge. But Jinkx nailed it! She was hysterical! When asked why she chose to impersonate Little Edie, Jinkx said people might not know who Little Edie was, but they should. Bless you Jinkx!
But it was more than her acting abilities that won Jinkx the hearts of viewers. Her personality and warmth shined through, especially while facing adversity. And boy, did she face it!
In clips of the contestants off stage in the Green Room, Jinkx appeared as a gentle soul who softly muttered the mantra, “Water off a duck’s back,” to steady her nerves before a performance.
But other contestants wouldn’t leave her alone, and grotesquely bullied her.
Alaska, Roxxxy Andrews, and Detox formed an alliance and were determined to unnerve Jinkx, constantly telling her she was too inexperienced and didn’t belong in the competition. Roxxxy was particularly harsh and screamed at her all the time. Jinkx suffers from narcolepsy, and on a few occasions nodded off while waiting in the Green Room. Roxxxy bitterly mocked Jinkx’s affliction in a challenge involving puppets.
It was very sad to see men who admitted they were bullied when growing up, becoming bullies themselves.
In the end, RuPaul done right. Jinkx Monsoon is an exciting face, not only in the world of drag, but in the general entertainment world too. It will be great fun to watch her career unfold.
