Edited to reflect that charges were made against Ariel Castro only. It’s just unfathomable. Three young women kidnapped and held hostage for 10 years in a Cleveland house which became their makeshift prison.
So far, we just have the shocking tip of the iceberg.
But the horrible details will unfold. For the next several months we’ll get more info than needed. The media is settled in, let the games begin.
Ariel Castro. There is no punishment sufficient for your crimes.
If you are executed, that’s too quick, too merciful.
If you’re locked up in prison, too meaningless. There’s no comfort knowing that our tax dollars are housing, feeding, and clothing you for the rest of your lives.
No legal punishment will provide proper restoration for your victims and their families.
Our ray of light is that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight, and a little girl are free.
Jaycee Dugard, who was only 11 when she was kidnapped and held captive for 18 years before being rescued in 2009, said, “As simple as it sounds, these women need the opportunity to have the privacy to heal and reconnect.”
So media, do your job reporting about the evildoers and their deeds. Track down how the police handled or mishandled the case. Talk to the neighbors. Fine do all that.
But leave these ladies alone for now. Don’t harass them with phone calls and invitations to be on talk shows. Don’t be hell bent on being the first to report SOMETHING they said. They’ve been through enough pain, don’t inflict any more emotional distress on them or their families.
Speaking words of wisdom, Let them be.
